Pour les "grognons"!

app.findGrepPreferences = app.changeGrepPreferences = null;
app.findGrepPreferences.findWhat = "Obi-wan Kenobi";
myFound = app.activeDocument.findGrep();
var F = myFound.length,  s = String("Obi-wan Kenobi").length;
for ( var f = 0; f < F; f++ )  if ( myFound[f].contents == myFound[f].lines[0].characters.itemByRange(0, s-1).contents )  myFound[f].appliedCharacterStyle = "Obi-wan Kenobi CharStyle";
app.findGrepPreferences = null;

Might be possible with the Convert Colors colors, but the best is to contact the authors of the file and ask them to change it for you in the source file and then create a new PDF.

Re: lightroom cc catalog

If I am understanding you correctly, "David" is your working hard drive. If I understand you correctly, you have your photos and catalog on that EHD. It seems to me that from what you have said the Toshiba EHD contains the cloned images. So here is how I would recommend that you work.

Do your editing as always on the David hard drive. When Lightroom prompts you for a backup of the catalog allow the backup to be written to the Toshiba EHD. When the images are backed up, allow them to be backed up to the Toshiba EHD in the same folder structure that they are in currently on the David EHD.

If only the catalog crashes on David, restore the latest backup from Toshiba and put it in the same folder on David as it was in before. If the images crash or the entire David EHD crashes, replace the David EHD, naming it David like it was before. Then you would copy the catalog from Toshiba to the same folder that it was in previously on David. That means you might have to re-create that folder. Then copy your image backup from Toshiba back to David (the new David). If you have backed up properly you will have the same folder structure that you had on the old David. Now you have a new David with a restored catalog backup and images copied from Toshiba. Then all you have to do is start Lightroom by double-clicking on the catalog on David. And THEN it should be business as usual. What WILL be lost is any editing that was done since the last catalog backup.

Your communication is still a little bit confusing. Lightroom is not going to keep track of the images on David as well as the images on Toshiba. Toshiba is a backup. Lightroom doesn't care where that backup is. You care because that is where you get your catalog and your images from in the event of a hard drive crash.

Reinstalling Cs5.5

I had the OS on my Macbook Pro uninstalled, and an older version reinstalled, so that it would run faster.

We removed all the apps, saved them on an external hard drive, and then reinstalled them once the (new) old OS was installed on my laptop.

Now my Cs5.5 is inaccessible.

Any idea about how I can reinstall it so that it works again?

Thanks

There are some free applications that can do some of what Adobe programs can do.  Maybe you could use those until you can afford Adobe products.

Why do my mobile displays a PDF made on my computer with a first cover page and then the next pages on double, as a single page view?

Not sure how this is related to your original question, but you can do it using this JavaScript code:

this.print({nStart:0});

Find corrupt images?

I have a dump of 30,000 time lapse images. For some reason one in every few thousand is corrupt, probably due to the card. I've scrolled through and found most of them but a couple are still hidden in there somewhere. Is there some way to find the offending corrupt images? Their presence halts any attempt to batch process the good images.

No it doesn't happen if Overprint Preview (view menu > overprint preview) is selected.

As soon as Overprint Preview is turned on, the greyscale image immediately drops in contrast - it looks lighter/fainter on screen.

You mean yes it happens (the contrast change) with Overprint Turned on?

Only the appearance on screen (and output as PDF or printing to office printer) changes.

You can check the actual output values via InDesign's Separation Preview's separation numbers, or AcrobatPro's Output Preview. You shouldn't be seeing placed grayscale output values changing in either app.

Hi

I like Trevor's idea to match the bevel with a sharp inner bevel using an extra layer. But rather than switching the lower bevel off, which made the outside edge flat,  I made that layer a group and add a layer mask to mask off the inner edge. Then added the new inner edge as Trevor described, setting the direction to down where the other was up so that the shading was from the same side and surrounded the image with the same shade so that there was no transparency where I masked the inner bevel.

It would have been a lot easier if Bevel & Emboss matched the corner shapes

Pour les "très-grognons, qui chercheraient seulement le premier mot de chaque ligne"!

var myWords = app.activeDocument.stories.everyItem().paragraphs.everyItem().lines.everyItem().words[0].getElements(),  W = myWords.length;
for ( var w = 0; w < W; w++ ) myWords[w].appliedCharacterStyle = "Red";

Re: Import previews for OM-D E-M1 Mark II are not sharp?

It is possible that LR doesn't generate these previews, but simply uses whatever suitable previews that are embedded in the raw file. I think I've read somewhere that files from Nikon cameras contain three different sized previews. To make the import dialog populate quickly, it probably uses the smallest preview initially, and loads a larger preview for the loupe view.

It could be that Olympus has changed the preview sizes in the raw files from the Mark II, so my guess is that this is more likely to be an Olympus problem rather than a Lightroom problem.

People reach for masks and selections far too quickly IMO. Half the time it can be done with a simple global adjustment.

It's a matter of context Dagg.  If I provided a client with shot where the background had been knocked out with the Magic Wand, that would be the last job I got from them.  Product shots are going to be used by page designers for websites, leaflets, packaging, and huge pull-out signs.  This job (I did everything except the background hills, that was taken by the client) was for a two metre high vinyl sign.

I used a 21Mp Canon 1DsMK3 for eight years waiting for a high pixel count 1D body for my commercial work, but eventually gave up and got a 5DS (which I absolutely love.  With 50Mp it is that much easier to make clipping path around the bottle top, or cap, in the case of beer bottles.   You have to consider the end use and client requirements, and product shots are usually going to involve clipping paths.  Definitely so, with a hard edged product like this torch.
